spring flowers, new posts

4 May 2008,10:47 pm
I heard Hayden Carruth read poetry today. It was profound. He's so very old, and so very alive. It's a tragedy that comes out in his poetry. I particularly like the moment in "prepare" when a bluejay comes, telling him to "prepare! prepare!" and he responds: "fuck you! come back tomorrow!" one must imagine sisyphus happy, no? in other news, my camus essay is a horrifying mess of sections, fragments, and subsections, but the roughly-hewn frame is still four single-spaced pages long, a good haul f...

Printmaking class project number one

19 Apr 2008,9:58 pm
The following prints are adapted from that photo, which I took last year around Taft . See all of them at once , pictures of the process , and a little video of making a print . I like oil wells. They look like dinosaurs, and they’re “drinking” liquefied ancient dinosaur matter, so they’re weird mechanical cannibals. This class is taught by the same person who taught my letterpress class a while ago. Working on paper takes a long time, but it’s fun and helps me thi...

The Belgian paper

9 Apr 2008,11:11 am
Completely useless. Gee, the thugs running worst shitholes of the world can forge documents signed by children and make all their Web access trackable and non-refutable. Dog bites man. We knew before this paper that they condition children to carry their own telescreens. The only thing I want to know about the BitFrost is how to defeat it, and the paper doesn't say. Useless.

Towards a bigger, better broadband future

30 Jan 2008,9:53 pm
( Extended cross-post from Google Public Policy Blog ) Broadband deployment in the U.S. is at best disappointing and at worst a crisis. The United States lags behind other countries in broadband uptake per capita, ranked 15th in the latest Organisation for Economic Co‐operation and Development (OECD) data . While consumers in Sweden and Japan are starting to zoom ahead with 20 and even 90 megabit/second connections delivered over fiber connections, U.S. consumers pay more for less, with only ...

Footime mouse: controlled by the feetFootime mouse: controlled by the feet

23 Jan 2008,6:01 pm
Like the paper clip of an earlier era, the mouse has become one of the most important productivity innovations of the PC era. And, also like the paper clip, the mouse has remained relatively unchanged in the 25 years since its introduction. Yes, we all were grateful when vendors clipped the mouse’s tail by introducing wireless connections. Most of us — in the non-Macintosh world, at least — cheered the introduction of the right-click button. And for a few who specialize in graphic-intensi...

i am so done with this research paper. so done. it's a good thing it's 12 pages already. now i don't have a new research paper due until next wednesday! i should probably get started. and then there's the clear writing requirement. and so forth. my hamster wheel has big, pointy teeth. i can't seem to find a way to waste time productively. which is kind of oxymoronic, but like... have you ever been there? where you can't seem to find anything to do that's really satisfying and de-stressing? i don...

Paperless 2.0

29 Aug 2007,9:48 am
Going paperless is a new mantra among many lawyers. With litigators proving out the cost savings of going paperless with discovery document collections, more and more lawyers are taking the dive and implementing paperless systems. The obvious cost savings are touted frequently. These include: 1) Scan once versus copy many times. 2) Less rent on file room space. 3) File room staffing costs. And 4) Copiers, toner and other hard costs of copying. But getting rid of paper is only a partial step in ...

Low Tech Deserves Attention

17 Aug 2007,4:10 pm
Carleo v. King is a case involving a claim by one lawyer against another lawyer for breach of a verbal contract. Plaintiff claimed that he represented certain clients in an employment matter, and that case was taken over by the Defendants. Plaintiff claimed that the second lawyer (King) agreed to pay fees for work performed by the first lawyer (plaintiff). Needless to say, this case was document intensive, including thousands of pages of the attorneys' respective files, pleadings and other m...

Life is Tough When You Can't Tell One Politician from Another - Haneef Part 2

14 Jul 2007,9:01 pm
Check out this article in the online paper : Mr Rudd, who was briefed early yesterday, also praised the AFP for its work in a "complex" case. I had to read the article twice because I thought they had made an error and quoted the A.G. Phil Ruddock but misattributed it to the opposition leader Kevin Rudd.

Gmail Paper

10 Apr 2007,8:21 am
The Vatican is moving forward fast with technology - the pope with his ipod, nuns with e-mail. But they might want to take advantage of Gmail Paper . A novel concept that will allow them to get their Gmail e-mail sent to them in printed form. The only drawback is that the pope can't print out what he listens to on his ipod - Gmail Paper says they can't print MP3 and WAV files.

Thoughts on Robust Systems

19 Feb 2007,3:33 pm
Reading Building Robust Systems , by Gerald Sussman. I'm not done yet, but so far (page 7) the paper is pretty vague and metaphorical. So I thought I'd scribble down some of the slightly-more-concrete thoughts that it triggers in my head:

Final version of paper

19 Dec 2006,11:53 am
Here's the final version of the paper describing my Master's research at Brown: Lowering: A Static Optimization Technique for Transparent Functional Reactivity . It will be presented at PEPM'07 in January. The work was very successful: I managed to get a speedup of 7810% for a program that had about 6000 lines of code. The abysmal performance of that program was what motivated the project in the first place.

Extracting Queries by Static Analysis

19 Dec 2006,11:14 am
Here's a very interesting paper, Extracting Queries by Static Analysis of Transparent Persistence , by Ben Wiedermann and William Cook. The idea is that instead of constructing a SQL query and then iterating over the results, you just write a program as if all the records in the database are available, and the language automatically figures out what (efficient) SQL query to construct. If-statements are automatically turned into where clauses, and reference traversal is automatically turned into...

Using a mind map as a TODO list

16 Mar 2005,2:38 pm
Mind maps are a really effective way of organizing information and ideas. I have used them for brainstorming, note taking, studying. They organize data in a hierarchical way, using a lot of nonconventional notations that seem to motivate your creative side. Usually the greatest value lies in the process of creating the specific mind map instead of the mind map itself. Most of the time I just scratch something on a piece of paper and then throw the paper away. Recently I have started using a com...

Guy: Then tell me u love me. Girl: Fine, I love u. Slow down! Guy: Now give me a BIG hug. *Girl hugs him* Guy: Can u take my helmet off & put it on? Its bugging me. Some bad news: I probably won't be able to complete all Swedish GNOME 2.8 translations in time for the 2.8.0 release. There's just too little time left , even if I worked all hours a day on it. I'm the only one to blame for this, because I've been working much on other stuff lately. Some good news instead: I just reported my 1000th GNOME bug report . I just wish I had been as good with triaging and resolving bugs. And in other personal news, I yesterday learned that I had passed the last exam I...

there are two things about my paper. maybe there were two papers, after all. i should ask the occam guy. anyway, there are two things 1. we should not allow our traditions to be redefined 2. we are an adolescent profession these are both in response to the shifting technological situation, which is the other part of my paper. librarians must react to and respond to the changes in technology that impact the creation and distribution of scholarly information. our responses must be shaped by two th...

Kutcher Punk'd?: Seeks Apology Over "[Bleeping]" Quote

11 Jul 2003,9:58 am
The New York Daily News reports here that Ashton Kutcher has demanded an apology from the London Evening Standard over a quote that Kutcher says he never uttered: that girlfriend Demi Moore "was the hottest actress in Hollywood when I was growing up. Now I'm [bleeping] her." Kutcher claims the paper simply made the quote up and is reportedly considering his legal options. It's also not a good sign when the reporter credited with the story also claims the quote was fabricated. According to the re...
