Chapter 15D-Rafe Knows

21 Jun 2008,7:01 pm
Tobal showed him the hospital tags. Rafe looked carefully at the two tags and slowly handed them back along with the necklace. “I guess they are,” he commented. “What else did you find?” Tobal slid the necklace back over his head and put the plastic tags back into his medicine bag before he unsheathed the dagger and handed it to Rafe. Rafe examined the golden dagger wordlessly and turned it so he could examine the initials better. “Your father?” He asked quietly and gave it back to ...

Family Resemblances

29 Apr 2008,10:29 am
From Claire’s birth people have asked me, “Whom do you think Claire looks like?” I have always replied, “Why, she looks like herself!” But really, it’s human nature to want to see family resemblances. I dug up some old photos for reflection. First, here is a photo of me when I was 18 months old. Now, here’s a photo of my sisters in 1959. My eldest sister (on the left with the huge grin) and I have often been confused for each other; we look quite simila...

I stopped a gang fight today. Actually, I pushed the worst guys apart and stood in the middle of them, screaming, if you want to hit someone, you got to hit me first. God, I really should not have done it, not like that. It was on the road between my work and home. I knew some of them, but not all, and they were all around 16-17 years old so big guys. Well, it worked out. But I am still a bit shaky from it.

Sticking to the scrip

29 Apr 2008,12:16 am
Every other Sunday, Pranav Gandhi wakes up and heads for Ahmedabad’s weekly waste market with one purpose: to spend three hours rummaging through the towering hauls of waste-paper merchants. Methodically, he digs past torn textbooks, old newspapers, scraps of cardboard and discarded shopping lists to search for that one rare gem: an old share or bond certificate, in even reasonably good condition, to add to his collection. Gandhi is a scripophilist, which is to say he collects antique stocks ...

Psycopg migrated to Bazaar

28 Apr 2008,10:10 am
Last week we moved psycopg from Subversion to Bazaar .  I did the migration using Gustavo Niemeyer ’s svn2bzr tool with a few tweaks to map the old Subversion committer IDs to the email address form conventionally used by Bazaar. The tool does a good job of following tree copies and create related Bazaar branches.  It doesn’t have any special handling for stuff in the tags/ directory (it produces new branches, as it does for other tree copies).  To get real Bazaar tags, I wrote a...

Seeing David’s earlier post, titled ’Flaming Logos‘, it was clear that a lot of work was put into recreating those 80s motion graphics logos. Plenty of 3D and a good dose of Flame or After Effects I’d wager. After Effects, Schmafter Effects. Check out how they did this back in the day? Who needs Maya when you’ve got 6 craftsmen sweating night and day over 3 months, a motion control camera from the ark, and some old school ingenuity. Hey, I know it’s a 10 minut...

I was exactly like him for many years, I loved incense and didn't feel the heaviness of the smell, but these days I am old and ....I guess just one of those annoying adults who'd want the air to be fresh instead of full of smell. Bad TV Ponderings - High School Reunion

8 Apr 2008,7:34 am
I blame the writer's strike. We weren't that much of a reality TV household, really. There was the first season of Survivor, and the odd episode of Top Chef, and of course my long-standing love of COPS, which isn't so much a "reality" show as it is an art form unto itself. So while we were casting our viewing net a little wider, we reconnected with some old favorites ( No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain ), discovered some mediocre fill-ins ( Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares ), and hit upon one ch...

5 Mar 2008,10:07 am
I try to only upload good pictures and this one ain't. However this young man's value isn't his appearance. It isn't his singing either. It's his guitar playing. I believe that this is the same young man who started out playing for change on the 3rd Street Promenade a few years ago. He was probably nine years old at the time. Brokered Advantage?

As the Democratic party barrels closer and closer to a brokered convention , conventional wisdom says it's a bad thing. I say notable because they may not be know much outside the blogging world, but that's ok because everyone points/quotes t...

Not a bad start to the week.

19 Nov 2007,8:35 am
This morning Renée and I woke up to The Tragically Hip's Fully Completely , got dressed, and were out the door by 6:15. A clear frosty morning with only a couple of stars in the sky. A guy scraping his windshield. A small black cat running to catch up to us and cross our path. Early morning traffic on St Laurent as we walked to the gym. It'd been a week since my last run (slightly less than a week) so my knees and ankles felt pretty good. Anyway by 7:30 I'd run a personal best. 4.25 miles (6.84...

5 Nov 2007,9:16 pm
I know this is kind of old, but I just saw it today, and it's pretty cool: Yup, that's Providence's skyline in the background and the terrible soulless blank wall of Brown's Life Sciences building. Em's dad's company worked on the project, which I would imagine was quite an engineering feat.

Blogging with Subtext

5 Oct 2007,3:15 pm
Once I'd made the decision to begin blogging again, I had a look around to see whether I should change the engine used to host my blog. 3 or 4 years ago, when I made the decision to move away from Radio Userland, I wrote my own engine using ASP.NET and SQL Server. What I created was very basic but the implementation taught me a lot about developing with ASP.NET. I focused on writing a scalable, reusable core that could readily be customised and made appropriate use of caching for commonly used ...

A quick summary of our German trip

17 Sep 2007,8:40 am
With work, out of town visitors and life all pouring heaps of activity into my life I fear I'm never going to have time to write a proper post about the trip we took to Germany with my parents so I'm just going to brain dump quickly so I can refer back to it later. Here's a quick summary of our German trip: Flew into Düsseldorf to visit our old house and haunts Drove to Ilsenburg in the Harz mountains to stay for a few days. From Ilsenburg we took aday trip to Goslar (home tosome of Paul...

Last Week's Football Scores

13 Sep 2007,12:37 am
So in our family we are very sports oriented. Since I have five children we live our lives according to the sport seasons. Right now its football . I've been helping coach my ten year old's team and last year they won the South Puget Sound Super Bowl. This year looks like it may be a repeat with them winning two close season opening games to the toughest teams they'll see before play-offs later this fall. They beat Puyallup 6-0 and their longest drive lasted 5 minutes to close the game in their ...

The Latin Mass in Africa - contacts

28 Jul 2007,3:37 pm
Over at LumenGentleman's site, the Summorum Pontificum Contact Database has been set up. So far, only 3 from South Africa - one from Onderstepoort, the country's veterinary centre, and two from the Eastern Cape - me and someone from Grahamstown. Quite far, and I'd hope for something closer, but I've never visited Grahamstown, and I might if they have the Latin Mass in its extraordinary form. I went to Mass here in Umtata tonight. This time they said the creed. Communion was via the "take and ...

Of Yardwork and HDTV

2 Jun 2007,11:09 am
After a marathon memorial day weekend of edging, hauling, de-weeding, flower planting, and laying out nearly 8 cubic yards of mulch (thanks Larry), we're almost ready for summer. I must have dumped nearly 500 lbs of 3in deep grass & refuse in the back half of yard(hidden from picture), away to compost. The french drain that runs through our back yard was so overrun that we had to dig out all the old mulch down to the black matting. I really should have done a before and after picture. Then...

Returning to Life

16 Apr 2007,7:37 pm
First, to all those who have inquired, yes, I am still alive, in the same way a hibernating bear is. That’s due to sheer exhaustion, to being stretched far too thin over the past six months or so. The new job, the new home, Conor (nearly three years old), Danny (nearly a year old), and a few lingering after-effects from previous contracts and jobs have been draining all my energy, and it’s only lately that I feel like I’m finally able to yawn and stretch, poke my nose out the ...

Data center crash call at 11:45 pm,New Year's eve

31 Dec 2006,11:56 am
Data center crash on New Year's eve There was a time in the bad old days, when I used to be an on-call data center support consultant. That essentially meant that as an on-call support person,I was like a criminal on parole, who had to report back to the cops whenever they felt bored and wanted even more boring company. Call from Burlington data center at 11:45 pm I once got a call from the Burlington data center at 11:45 pm, on New Year's eve. I usually think better when ethlyl is under my bell...

How To Rate Articles on MSDN

21 Nov 2006,4:44 pm
Something you might have noticed as you perused the updated Windows SharePoint Services or Office SharePoint Server SDKs--or any MSDN technical article in the last week or so--was that the familiar ratings system has been replaced. Since the new ratings system may not be immediately discoverable or intuitive, I figured it was worth taking a few minutes to show you how to rate an article or provide feedback using the new system. The first thing you'll notice is that MSDN's standard 9 point ratin...

Heartbreak Hotel

It was one of those moments when you say something you know you shouldn't. But I couldn't help myself. I was fourteen and still in the throes of teenage-girl-smart-ass disease. 25 years ago tomorrow, I was sitting in the backyard listening to the radio when I heard the news. I went inside and found my mother in her room, making her bed. "Hey, mom. Guess you won't be going to that Elvis concert next week." "What?" "He's dead." I may have snickered, I don't know. Mom ran into the bathroom and tur...

However, in the end, my primary business user has a huge smile on his face whenever he passes by and always says "Hello" often accompanied b

SAGE ADVICE FROM A CHEROKEE CHIEF

11 Apr 2005,3:01 pm
One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, "My son, the battle is between 2 wolves." "One is Evil. It is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith." The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his gran...

It was called Orfine and turned the edge of everything I touched into razorblades, so I couldn't open the door or escape through a window. I was strangely motivated to port some old MonoDevelop code to GtkAction and GtkUIManager today. Something still seems awkward about that API. I'm not sure it is much of an improvement, if any, from the old way of doing menus and toolbars and it seems to make some things slightly harder. My main beefs are the callback-based adding of the widgets seem to force me to playing with PackStart/PackEnd tricks and that adding non-button ToolItems seems to take an extra step. I think the second might be ...

TDD is a risk management tool

5 Nov 2004,1:07 am
Programming is not characterized by an even distribution of effort. Two tasks, done in the same amount of code might require different time to complete. That variation might cause risks of not being able to finish on time and hit the planned deadline. Bugs are unpredictable. Changing old code requires a lot of insight into it, in order to avoid introducing defects. More dragons lurk that way... How does TDD help us in that situation? Killing bugs is one way. A cool side effect of the TDD process...

Kirkurk-Mosul-Haifa Pipeline ?

11 Aug 2004,12:54 am
Haaretz reports that the US Administration is checking the possibility of pumping oil from the Iraq's Kirkurk area to Mosul and then to a Haifa oil terminal, via Jordan. The Americans requested a cost estimate of repairing the old Mosul-Haifa pipeline , inactive since the end of the British mandate in Palestine in 1948. I presume this idea wanted to avoid the old Syrian track on the Golan via a bypass through Jordan... Of course, if you consider the US government's growing anti-Syrian stance, o...

I know you've heard the old saying, "Never assume, for when you assume..." Horse puckey! Some things SHOULD be assumed. Some things MUST be assumed for us to function as a society. Tonight, I went to Jack-in-the-Box for my usual late-night refueling. My poison of choice tonight was two $0.99 chicken sandwiches, with swiss cheese and extra pickles added. Easy enough, right? On the way home from my nightly trip to 24-Hour Fitness, I was listening to the local classic rock station. I reminisced (OK, I was four years old when the album was released) while listening to White Bird, but I'd never heard the rest of the album. It was charmingly dated, with lots of neo-Renaissance instruments playing behind their pseudo-psychedelic-pop vocals. But what really go...

Foo... over a year. I realized at some point a while back that I wasn't big into posting. As blogs came into their own, it very much clarified my thoughts: "who the hell might be interested in me?" It seems rather egocentric to believe that you're an interesting person, and that people want to know what you're doing, what you think about things, etc. I spoke for a while about it with Scott Johnson while at OSCOM . I'm still not sure that I entirely "get it", but he did have a valid point that a ...
