17 Jun 2008,3:48 am

Everyday living these days

27 Apr 2008,5:34 pm
As I post less and less about specific medical events (every chemo is just the same these days), I realized that I'm just plain posting less and less. So here's what it's like at the end of 5-6 cycles of ABVD - what I've been told by nurses and patients alike is "one of the hardest chemos" there is. Before treatment, I read a bunch of stuff, and was prepared for side effect after side effect. I was a little confused - how could you have both mouth sores AND dry mouth? constipation AND diarrhea?...

Clearing

22 Apr 2008,7:49 pm
The fuzz in my brain seems to be slowly clearing. I think a lot of the problem has been blocking on some of the household projects, and once we decided to talk them over I felt better. I'm carrying that over to work, where I really need to get cracking. I'm down to three weeks to get a prototype of this new feature up and running. Eek!

more like BAHpollo, and the ARGHpollonian state. Spring finds me trying to live again. I find myself fond of the Brothers Karamazov; by which I mean especially the eponymous characters. I was going to pick a favorite, but I like all three. Dmitri is heroic, Ivan is philosophic, Alyosha is loving. Body/Mind/Soul. In other news, I scrawled wretched poetry in class today. Terrible poetry, but I haven't written any in forever, so it's a marked improvement. " the sun whittles white off the hills, lur...

The reflection of the watcher in the mind

16 Apr 2008,11:02 am
Q: If the disciple does not know the goal, how can he make out the obstacles? M: The goal is shown by the Guru, obstacles are discovered by the disciple. The Guru has no preferences, but those who have obstacles to overcome seem to be lagging behind. In reality the disciple is not different from the Guru. He is the same dimensionless centre of perception and love in action. It is only his imagination and self-identification with the imagined, that encloses him and converts him into a person. The...

Can The Y Combinator Idea Turn Into A Movement?

8 Apr 2008,6:18 am
Most readers of this blog know what Y Combinator is. Hell, last month two of the top five referrers were affiliated with Y Combinator . But for those who don't know, Y Combinator was started by Paul Graham and now runs two programs a year in which about twenty teams (each program) are funded with enough money to pay for food and rent for roughly three months while they build and launch a web application. With the announcement last night of Google App Engine , it's literally possible to build yo...

Guhhhhhhhhh. I have the plague. Dysentery. A stomach bug. Something. Spent all last night throwing up&down, waking every hour from 8 to 8 to stumble frantically to the bathroom. I was so thirsty, but whenever I went to drink stuff I'd throw up again. I feel like a train hit me. Brain too weak to do schoolwork. Which sucks, because I have to finish War and Peace this weekend. Still, doing much better than I was last night.

Life is good

10 Feb 2008,10:36 pm
I'm forgetting about Anson. :) There are so many better guys out there. I've been putting myself "back on the market" so to speak. I have definitely raised my standards. I thought that would make fewer men go for me but au contraire, it feels good to have high standards. In the meantime, I'm just really enjoying life. Last month, I volunteered for this performance arts festival and got to see many free shows that I would not have seen otherwise. I met many people as well. They're mostly girls. T...

Comfortably Numb

7 Feb 2008,8:13 pm
"Hello... hello... hello... is there anybody in there?" I was sitting on my deck this morning thinking about Lent and the desert experience when the words from Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb slowy echoed into my consciousness. I was meditating on the story of Jesus' time in the wilderness and I was reminded of John Candy's role as Dewey Oxberger in the comedy STRIPES . He explains his reason for joining the Army was to emerge from boot-camp as a " lean, mean fighting machine ". And it seems that...

Myomo E100 NeuroRobotic System

23 Jan 2008,6:03 pm
EVERY YEAR some 700,000 people suffer strokes, and most of them have difficulty moving their arms afterward. The Myomo system re-trains patients to control their limbs. The device detects faint muscle signals that indicate a patient’s desire to move his or her arm and uses them to trigger a motor, stashed in an accompanying shoulder bag, that mechanically assists the arm’s movement. By using the Myomo to perform simple tasks like opening a jar, patients strengthen brain pathways that re-tea...

MT ate my post

10 May 2006,1:23 am
I was going to post about playing a "free" poker tournament (you had to buy a $7 ticket to a buffet) tonight, but Movable Type ate my post. So I'll recap the short version: - Softball got rained out, so the guys and I went to a local pool hall to play in an Eastern Poker Tour event. - I got lucky, beating AK with AQ twice and AT with JT. I hit 3-outers each time. - I finished 4th, on the bubble, earning me a pat on the back, but no prizes. - This was good practice for the daily tourney at Foxwoo...

I'm still alive. The vomitting came back full force (pun intended) yesterday. So I am trying to deal with that while holding my side so my hernia doesn't decide to get worse. You know what love is? I'll tell you anyway. Love is ~ * cleaning the apartment everyday for the 9 days (so far) when you know your significant other hates a mess and can't do it. * helping her to the bathroom, back to the couch, into bed etc. * rubbing her back while she vomits, washing her face, changing her pj's into cle...

The Lancet - Critical article on the role of psychologists in interrogation

The Minimally Conscious State

30 Sep 2003,2:18 am
The brain activity of people in comas or with major communication disorders (vegetative states) is turning out to be much more normal than previously believed. In other words, people with such problems may be in fact quite conscious, or at least in a "minimally conscious state". This great New York Times article describes the research which may be redefining what we think of as states of consciousness. The article speculates what it might be like to be minimally conscious: "You wake up every mo...
