Santa Monica House Names: The GeNorge

27 Apr 2008,3:32 pm
What's a Genorge? Oh, about two or three pounds. No, wait, that's a HenWay . Genorge might translate to "The Norwegian". A little difficult to decipher Norske website's words. Still, it's a cool architectural element on an apartment building in Santa Monica that has always intrigued me.

More Movies, but not M-SPIFF

25 Apr 2008,5:31 pm
I saw a couple of movies outside of the festival this week. First up was: Technically, The Visitor is part of the M-SPIFF, because it was the opening film. But I couldn't make it that night and was lucky enough to get tickets to a sneak peek this week. It's opened at the Lagoon this weekend and it's a wonderful film. It's about a Connecticut college professor named Walter who is living a life of quiet desperation. He is forced to present a paper at a conference in NYC, but when he shows up at th...

New Apartments and the Reality of Paying Bills...

24 Apr 2008,5:25 am
So, why am I online - knowing full well that I need to wake up in roughly four hours - instead of bed? Well, I'm pretty sure stress is in there somewhere. I'm really stressed out because of an impending move that will need to take place within the next week. Jeremy and I got an apartment, after a frantic month of searching. It was a financial nightmare to set up. It took Jeremy's dad taking out a loan - which we will be responsible for paying him back on - in order to cover the deposit and first...

I Hate Money...

2 Apr 2008,9:33 pm
Allow me to explain what has been going on lately... First, I got rejected for grad school, again. That doesn't mean I won't still try, but it means that I am deferred another year, at least. It also means I'm in Portland for a little while longer. I'm frustrated and a little heart-broken, but I'm not horribly crushed. I just need to keep working at it. What this won't defer, however, are my student loan payments. I am not looking forward to that. Secondly, I need to move out by May 11. During t...

Why I love Santa Monica: Bad Feng Shui

17 Feb 2008,9:41 am
Santa Monica locals love Chinese feng shui . However what few locals know about Chinese culture is that they put a LOT of thought into their naming of things because of a sort of verbal feng shui. Obviously, this apartment building was named long before feng shui ever entered the local consciousness.

Cincinnati cinners

12 Feb 2008,12:52 pm
So during the last few weeks we drove to Ohio, found an apartment in Cincinnati, and bought a scooter. So far so good, the cat is still alive, though slightly mal-adjusted. Sam loves his new job, and I work in Kentucky. Everyday at work I want to say " I'm not in Kansas any more, holy shit! I'm in Kentucky!" So far we love Cincinnati, we have been spending a little too much money on all that shit you need when you move, and we went to Ikea baby! We found a cool wine bar where we go to not-snooty...

Life is good

10 Feb 2008,10:36 pm
I'm forgetting about Anson. :) There are so many better guys out there. I've been putting myself "back on the market" so to speak. I have definitely raised my standards. I thought that would make fewer men go for me but au contraire, it feels good to have high standards. In the meantime, I'm just really enjoying life. Last month, I volunteered for this performance arts festival and got to see many free shows that I would not have seen otherwise. I met many people as well. They're mostly girls. T...

Domain related junk mail

8 Feb 2008,6:31 pm
Domain related junk mail , originally uploaded by mathowie . In the beginning, I listed my home phone number and apartment address on all my domains. By the late nineties, the marketers/spammers showed up and after the tenth early morning phone pitch and junkmail blast, I gave up and fabricated a generic-sounding address and slapped a movie-style 555 phone number on all my domains. Last Fall I finally buckled down and got a PO Box and I decided to try putting a real business address and phone n...

a damn shame

23 Jan 2008,7:50 am
It too bad about Heath Ledger. He was found dead in an NY apartment yesterday. Looks like sleeping pills were involved but it is too early to say much beyond that. Regardless of what further investigations turn up, his death is a damn shame. Here is a young (28) talented actor, already with an academy award nomination under his belt, a promising career ahead of him, set to appear in his biggest film yet (in terms of box office) this summer. He leaves behind small daughter he had with actress Mic...

It's the first Monday of 2008 and I'm sitting here at the dining room table with sounds of heavy destruction coming from the front of the apartment. I have used the bathroom door (which opens into a hallway) to block Gunner and myself in the back half of the apartment. We are having the bedroom floor ripped up at the moment. Jean Claude (our landlord) is trying to address the sound issues in this place. The hardwood floors are great but they are creaky as hell and as the house is 50+ years old t...

Getting chilly

8 Nov 2007,9:01 am
Em and I have a thing where we try to make it to October 15th before we turn the heat on. October 15th has been balmy the past couple years, so we've pushed it back to November 1st. This year we were perfectly content to pull on the sweaters and do some extra cuddling, so we pushed our deadline back again, this time to November 15th. So today is the 8th and next week is looking awfully far away, especially when there's frost on the grass in the mornings. Think we can make it, in our third floor...

Ok, well we made it safe and sound.....We have to switch apartments at the end of December (they had the wrong one ready for us ) but oh well....all worked out well in the end... I'll get pictures of the apartment together once we're all unpacked and situated, but in the meanwhile here are a few quick photos.

Wow. Word to random, out of nowhere Dr. bothering sickness. Ear infection bad enough to merit two different kind of antibiotics....apparently its two different kind of infections...but it all sucks none the less. My balance is off. I can't hear anything out of my left ear, and driving is well....less than a pleasureable experience. Hopefully this shit is somewhat better by tomorrow, because as of now I don't think I've left my apartment since Saturday night.... Ugh.

I'm still alive. The vomitting came back full force (pun intended) yesterday. So I am trying to deal with that while holding my side so my hernia doesn't decide to get worse. You know what love is? I'll tell you anyway. Love is ~ * cleaning the apartment everyday for the 9 days (so far) when you know your significant other hates a mess and can't do it. * helping her to the bathroom, back to the couch, into bed etc. * rubbing her back while she vomits, washing her face, changing her pj's into cle...

So I pretty much have not updated my LJ all summer. My summer has been fine, I have been working at chipotle all summer. Work is o.k. I feel walked on sometimes but it's cool for the most part. I was living with a friend over the summer in a little apartment and just moved into Goose Hollow with some really good friends of mine that I go to church with. It is a two bedroom apartment and there are going to be four girls living in it which I didn't like at first but it is actually going to rock be...

nightmare hotline gives you so much more

26 Feb 2005,5:37 pm
I dreamed I was walking down the hall to get to my apartment, and as I turned my key into the lock, a man with curly redhair and thick, disdainful mouth shoved me inside the room and planted a syringe into my arm. It was called Orfine and turned the edge of everything I touched into razorblades, so I couldn't open the door or escape through a window. Panicked, I asked with all my might for another dream, and it worked. I then dreamed of an old scholar in a dark armchair, with a pile of horror p...

I have a book called 'help! My apartment has a ki

5 May 2004,10:50 am
I have a book called 'help! My apartment has a kitchen!' I've always thought a better title would be, just stylistically, 'help! There's a kitchen in my apartment!' I mention this because for the first several weeks of my first term in library school, it felt like my textbooks were screaming 'aaaah! There's an internet in the library!' can the internet fundamentally change the profession of librarianship? There are those who would claim that it already has, but I would disagree. The internet and...

A Time To Move On.....

20 Mar 2004,2:56 am
I was so busy for the past days getting ready to move to a new apartment.  Time has come to move.  For the past days, I called the SBC telephone company for my telephone connection, I did call the ComEd, the electric company here in Illinois, for my electric connection, I did call the Comcast cable company for my cable connections, I did call to schedule with the "movers" for this mornings move, I did send my change of address form to the post office, I did call my family and friends that I wil...

Letting go after 7 years.....possible?

16 Mar 2004,3:13 am
It's been a while, again, guys!  Nothing much significant happened to me, aside from turning 1 year older.....OH, my back hurts!......LOL. Chicago experienced a slight snowshower earlier.  I just wondered if this comming Saturday would be the official spring season.  I am looking forward to that time when we could see those beautiful flowers and those folliages comming out.  It's such a great time of the year.....a new beginning! Speaking of a new beginning, I will be moving to a new apartment ...

....."I hope I was not the villain!"

20 Feb 2004,4:22 am
I got nothing special to talk about here in my journal.  Just bored here and just got nothing to do, so, I thought of visiting my journal and log in some sweet nothings. My shift at work, though busy, went fine and well.  All the patients did "behave" and had no untoward incidents during the whole shift.  At the start of the shift, I did my nursing rounds and I got a new patient, who was admitted from the previous shift.  I did introduce myself and did reorient the patient with the time, place ...

"February 14.....was it?"

18 Feb 2004,2:39 am
Here I am again, it's been a week that I haven't visited my journal.  I was busy for the past days looking for an apartment.  My apartmentmate(s) - husband and wife, who got married last summer wanted to "start a family."  They decided to move and not lease anymore in the apartment we lived.  It's a 2 bedroom apartment I am living at right now, so I decided, also, to move on and look for another apartment myself.  Being single and all by myself (this time), I have found a one bedroom apartment ...
